An emergency snow shelter in the fall

Paul and Joy skied in to find about fifteen inches of wet
unconsolidated snow from the first storm last November.
They worked the snow with their skis
and waited a while for it to change structure and set up.
Paul is able to work with the hardened snow, cutting it into
horizontal blocks and forming
an emergency shelter against the wind and weather.
Paul excavated the snow to the frozen ground, placing the blocks
at the sides and cantilevering them
until he could cap them with a series of
roof blocks.
This is the finished emergency shelter with the end and door left
off. It lacks the heat-trap structure of a formal snow cave,
but it will
protect the prepared adventurers from wind and storm. It will take a
little more work for two, I think-

This is an example of how a knowledgeable couple, equipped with skis or snowshoes, a shovel and a special snow saw can construct an emergency shelter in a couple of hours in just fifteen inches of new wet unconsolidated snow. One day soon, I will pitch my tent in ten minutes, (a two person two pound free standing single wall four season Black Diamond Firstlight tent), dig a pit for my feet, sit in the doorway with a brew and watch the snow cave-construction-fun as we enjoy a Traditional Mountaineering snowcamping skills weekend Seminar near Meisner snow park.
