Wednesday, August 14, 2002, South Sister South Ridge Summer Summit Climb (10,358)
A summer climb of South Sister by the South Ridge Climbers trace.  This climb is suitable for strong hikers as well as more experienced mountaineers.   Elevation gain to the summit is 5,000 feet of narrow trails covering fifteen round-trip trail miles including significant scrambling up and down steep loose scree underlain by hard down-sloping volcanic rock.  Views are terrific.  Space is limited, pre-registration required . Practice your light and fast mountain travel and navigational skills on this circumnavigation of the South Sister Massif.  Route includes hiking on beautiful trails, overnight bivy at a high glacial tarn and return miles cross-country over glacier moraines past the Prouty Glacier, and finally dropping into the Green Lakes Basin.  Space is limited, pre-registration required . Monday, October 7, 2002, Trail Restoration near Brokentop trailhead with John Schubert, USFS Trails Specialist
Join volunteers from TraditionalMountaineering for this project directed by Trails Specialist and Bend Councilor John Schubert.  We will be transplanting native plants and sewing seed in this spectacular high country.  Be prepared for possible cold, windy and rainy above tree line conditions. This physical work will be done to USFS requirements under individual Volunteer Agreements which need to be completed before October 3, with Todd Cardin, USFS Volunteer Coordinator, 383-4000.  Call Bob Speik at 385-0445 by October 4, for possible carpool arrangements.

Saturday, October 19, 2002, Broken Top Circumnavigation
Practice your light and fast mountain travel and navigational skills on this low key circumnavigation of the Broken Top Massif.  Route includes hiking on beautiful trails, a scramble on a climbers trace, some easy glacier travel, some cross-country travel over glacial moraines and finally a drop into the Green Lakes Basin and return to the trail head.   We will hike together at a social pace.  A repeat of this popular trip.
