Little known about remains, pending medical examiner's investigation

July 26 - Hikers in the Broken Top area west of Bend made a grisly discovery Friday afternoon of apparent human remains, though authorities had few details to provide, pending a medical examiner’s findings.
Around 2 p.m., Deschutes County sheriff’s officers received a cell phone call from hikers near the base of Broken Top, who said they possibly found human remains on the west slope of the 9,175-foot peak, said
Under-sheriff Larry Blanton.
Sheriff’s detectives and members of the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue unit traveled to the scene and located and removed “what appears to be human remains,” Blanton said.
The victim’s name, gender and cause of death were not known Friday night. Once the medical examiner completes the examination, that information could be available as soon as early next week, Blanton added.
