Lute Jerstad conducting a traditional crevasse rescue class on Mt. Hood in 1973

Lute Jerstad conducts a traditional crevass rescue practice

"I'm the one being lowered into the crevasse and Lute is on the far right - checking things out, but not hovering. I know I'm being lowered because of the two lines. Once "in" I pulled up my prussic and worked up one line. The guys sort of laughed at me because my prussics were made of manila rope (all I could afford) - but the rope worked just fine. And I didn't see anyone else jumping forward to go down in the crevasse."  --Paul Chance  (Paul went on to attend courses with the American Avalanche Institute and the Exum Guide School).
