Cascade Cycling Classic wheels through Central Oregon

Cycling Classic wheels through Central Oregon starting today
Published: July 10, 2002
Bulletin staff report

The 2002 Cascade Cycling Classic begins today with a 110-mile mountain stage for pro men riders, starting and finishing in Bend.

The 23rd annual Classic, billed as the longest-running stage racing event in the United States, will host more than 200 cyclists competing for $21,500 in prizes. Participants come from throughout North America and Europe.

The five-day event continues through Sunday. Besides the elite men's racers, pro women and Category 3 men's cyclists also will compete.

Top men's cyclists will start off the races today at 10 a.m. The course will take the racers past Mount Bachelor and the High Lakes, around Crane Prairie Reservoir and back into Bend.

The pro women's division rolls into action on Thursday, and Category 3 masters will race on Saturday and Sunday.

This year's CCC has some substantial format changes, notably the second mountain stage for pro men, which is also the first stage for pro women. The 72-mile stage features an astonishing 7,000 feet of climbing with an ascent over twisting McKenzie Pass on the way to Sisters, and then another climb out of Sisters up Three Creeks Road.

The change returns the race to a classic climb and offers more variety.

The other significant change concerns Friday's Twilight Criterium, a 40-lap circuit race through downtown Bend. Last year, the women's portion of the race had to be canceled after a loose dog triggered a massive pileup of men's cyclists.

The entire course will be lined with caution tape, with volunteers stationed at 100-foot intervals. Downtown streets will be closed an hour earlier, at 5 p.m. Friday, to give racers more daylight time.
