Monday, January 31, 2005, Deschutes County Commissioners' Hearing on the future use of The Badlands, 5:30PM
The Deschutes County Commissioners will hold a public hearing to decide whether to endorse designating Badlands as Wilderness. They will be making a decision at the end of the meeting on whether or not to endorse a wilderness designation. Because Sen. Wyden and Rep Walden have been waiting for the Commissioners to weigh in – the Commissioners decision is crucial. If they decide to endorse, Badlands may become wilderness this year. If they do not endorse, Badlands Wilderness may not become a reality. This is your chance to let the Commissioners know that you support permanently protecting the Badlands as Wilderness. A very large well organized turn-out is expected from off-road ATV and Motorcycle enthusiasts. Make your non-motorized voice heard by letting the Commissioners know you want the Badlands WSA protected as lawful Wilderness.  Go to 1300 NW Wall Street - downstairs conference room, before 5:30PM

Be present at the public meeting at 10AM at the Commissioners Hearing Room, 1300 NW Wall Street, next to the express way in downtown Bend.

"March 23’s Bulletin Article “Commissioners consider Badlands federal wilderness –with a road,” states that the “commissioners may consider endorsing a federal wilderness designation for the Badlands with one caveat: Keep a 8.5 mile route running through the area open to vehicle traffic.” Route 8 was closed by the BLM after a multi-year planning process that looked at all the issues and competing uses on public lands in Central Oregon. Not only would that proposal undermine the careful public planning process, it would also open the Badlands up to increased vandalism and management challenges."

Monday, May 30, 2005, Memorial Day

We respect and support our nation's full time professional military forces and the all the men and women of the Army Reserve and National Guard

These men and women and their families are carrying a disproportionate share of the burden of this very different war.

Friday, December 9, 2005 4:30PM on OPB, Recreation Fees on Public Lands
"In 1996, the U.S. Congress passed a recreation fee demonstration project that allowed federal agencies to start charging the public to use public lands. Last year, Congress passed the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act which extended the fees for another ten years. This law also increased the penalty for using public lands without paying this fee to six months in federal prison and $5000 fine.

The Forest Service, citing budget cuts, has recently turned over the management and fee collection for many public campgrounds to private concessionaires. Reservations for these campgrounds are made through private corporations, which collect a commission on each reservation. Businesses such as REI and GI Joes also collect a commission when they sell the passes required to visit many trailheads in national forests.

This week, you'll hear from both sides of this issue. Host: Christy George. Guests: Derrick Crandall, president of the American Recreation Coalition in Washington, DC; and Scott Silver, Wild Wilderness in Bend, Oregon."

"I took a shot at Mount Logan last April as one half of a party of two. Mount Logan is the highest peak in Canada and the second highest in North America... honest. I took a video camera and a solar battery charger hoping to get enough decent footage to put together a 45 minute video. While I did get enough footage to fill 45 minutes, you can be the judge of whether it is 45 decent minutes. Free popcorn will be provided as incentive/bribery to sit through the whole thing."  Cascades Mountaineers host.
